Great
Software
"Free
software'' is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the
concept, you should think of ``free'' as in "free speech,'' not as in
"free beer''.
Folder Size
This great piece of free software allows you to see the size of folders just as you see the size of files in windows explorer.
DC++
A file sharing and chat room application. DC++
is
an open source client for the Direct Connect protocol.
Comes in very handy at a lanparty. Much less traffic than browsing a
workgroup. Think of it as a cross between FTP IRC and a
browser.
Firefox
A web browser that is more secure, better for your privacy,
and has dozens of great plug-ins:
- Flashblock
Blocks all flash media with a little F button. Push the
button to see the content.
- Bugmenot
Autofills the registration information for websites like the New York
Times.
- Chatzilla
IRC client that comes with Mozilla or there's a
plugin
version for Firefox.
OpenOffice.org
A
full office suite
based on open file formats. Based on Sun's Star
Office.
Filezilla
FTP software
-- Article
on Filezilla at Tech TV.
Privoxy
Remember the
old Junkbuster
proxy? It was a
tiny piece of software that would stand between your browser and the
internet and filter out all of the ads. Well Junkbuster.com
last updated
the software in 1998. But they freed the code! Making it available
to
anyone who wanted it.
Some people took the code and began developing
it. It works much better than the old junkbuster. Privoxy
is the "Privacy
Enhancing Proxy".

Xchat
is a free IRC
client for
windows. It allows you to connect to thousands of "chat
rooms"
all over the world. I like to go to SearchIRC
to find the
channels I need. Some
commands you might need to know to
use
IRC are : ( / all commands start with a foward
slash).
Xchat's
author is
in the middle of a dispute about its change in license. Right
now
Xchat is 30 day trialware.
I
switched to the Chatzilla plugin for Firefox. See above.
/attach
irc.server.net to connect to an
IRC server
/join #channel to join a channel
on that server.
/list
to list all of the
channels on that server.
Freenode.net is a great place to talk about Free software
projects. QuakeNet
and Gamesurge.net
are good for
gamers.
K-Lite
Mega Codec Pack
Because of the annoying nature of Real Player. Someone came up with an
alternative. It has a lot of other codecs in it as well. It's availible
in three versions with the MEGA version being my favorite. If
you
have the Opera or Mozilla/Firefox browser make sure you hit the
checkbox for such.
DC++
Got me?
Looks better than browsing a workgroup.
I'll do some experimenting and write some more later.
